As doulas, we accompany women in labor to help ensure a safe and satisfying birth experience. We draw on our knowledge and experience to provide emotional, physical, and informational support to the laboring woman and her family. We communicate with you to ensure that you have the information you need to make informed decisions as they arise in labor. We provide reassurance and perspective to you and your partner (if applicable), and make suggestions for labor progress, comfort and relaxation such as massage, acupressure, positioning, and various other comfort techniques. We are independent and self-employed—as your doula, we are working for you, not your caregiver or birth facility.
Big Apple Doula’s philosophy statement, and that of ICEA, is as follows:
We support family-centered maternity and newborn care and the right of parents to make informed choices based on knowledge of alternatives. We will work with other health care professionals and consumers to promote family-centered care, breastfeeding, and parent-infant bonding. We understand and accept our primary responsibility to be supporting the laboring woman and new family. We view birth as a natural, normal life event, not a medical event. We strive to nurture and protect women’s memories of their birth experiences.
